Lent Term, Issue 1, 2008 - The Griffin

Editorial Welcome

Editorial Welcome Image

And welcome to the all-new Cartmel Griffin! We are the new magazine editors, Stephen and Rachael, and you can see Stephen’s ugly mug and Rachael’s ‘stunning beauty’ in the picture over there to the left.

We hope you enjoy reading this new magazine, and if not you have to let us off ‘cause it’s our first time. It’s packed with interesting information, as well as pointless rambling, on topics like the new Extrav theme, a socials round-up and some wonderful film and gadget reviews by none other than ‘famous’ Robbie Pickles!

We’ve tried hard to bring something new to this issue of…

Office Hours

Office Hours

Sometimes you just need someone you don’t know to chat to, right? Well if you need someone to listen for whatever reason, five members of the JCR hold office hours each week for just this cause.

First off, our Education and Welfare Officers have office hours on the following days:
Will - Friday from 11.30am-12.30pm
Jo - Monday from 11.30am-12.30pm
(Free condoms are also available from them at these times)

Next is our Equal Opportunities Officers:
Neil - Wednesday from 11.30am-12.30pm
Pippa - Wednesday from 3-4pm

Finally, in what may well be a first for a President, we have:
Sam - Tuesday from 1.30-2.30pm…

A Furious Success

A Furious Success

Last Friday saw the return of Friday Fury, which premiered in week 11, an on campus bar crawl with a mission – collect the logo from every bar! The first time around it proved to be the biggest and most successful event since Fresher’s Week in October. Sugarhouse was more packed that night than I have ever seen it, with almost everyone there sporting wristbands from the bars (a select few had even collected all eight!).

Last Friday’s event was just as popular as the first, with hundreds of you guys all heading down to the bars to grab your college…

Vodka Night

Vodka Night

On Tuesday of week 4, Cartmel Bar held a vodka night with offers, prizes, and lots of drunk people. With offers like £2 for a double Smirnoff and mixer, and prizes ranging from bottles of Rev’s flavours to a Smirnoff snowboard worth around £300, the bar was unsurprisingly packed. Crates of vodka had been ordered specially by Jason the Bar manager for the event, and it proved a good investment as people queued all night for drinks.

Then it was off to Revolution’s (it was a Tuesday after all), with everyone donning their free necklaces, wristbands, and masks and generally looking…

Robbies Reviews - Sweeney Todd

Because it’s a tough life being a student with deadlines, coursework and lectures taking up our time, we’ve decided to give you some welcome excuse for distraction with a double spread of up to date reviews…

Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd sees a fifth collaboration of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp as they take on Sondheim’s gothic musical masterpiece to bring to the silver screen, and make quite a good success of it. The urban legend of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber who slits the throats of his costumers, is well known, but the film adds greater depth to the…

Robbies Reviews - Upcoming Films

Juno

This contemporary teen comedy starring Ellen Page and Michael Cera was a massive hit at the American box office, and is an absolute must see. Juno is a self-assured teenager – but her confidence takes a knock when she finds herself pregnant. But she does what any normal girl would do – she sets out to find adoptive parents for her soon-to-be-born baby.

National Treasure- Book Of Secrets

A sequel to 2004’s National Treasure, starring Nicholas Cage as Ben Gates, a treasure hunter and conspiracy theorist. Ben attempts to clear his name when it is discovered that his ancestor may…

Robbies Reviews - MacBook Air

Apple’s latest addition to its laptop range, the MacBook Air, has claimed tobe the world’s thinnest laptop, but does this come at a price? Unfortunately yes. Lacking both a CD drive and low connectivity (it won’t work with non-wireless internet [including Resnet!] without a USB adaptor) this laptop makes rather too many compromises for my liking. It also features only one USB port. At £1200 for the 80GB model, it really is asking too much to do without key features which even a £150 laptop would come with, albeit without the thin (and rather fragile) chassis. It does however sport a rather…

LUTube? Whats LUTube?

For those of you who haven’t yet heard about LUTube or LUTV, it’s an exciting new group at Lancaster University which is going to be huge, achieving something never done here before - having our own TV channel over the internet! ‘Video magazine’ shows will be presented, produced, edited and recorded by the students for the students.

At the last meeting, 50 ideas were pitched which was narrowed down to 6 pilot shows - all of which are in the process of being made as you read! These include event coverage of the Freshers Fair, a Game Show, a demonstrational cookery…

College Elections!

College Elections

Thursday of week 4 saw the elections for Cartmel College, with plenty of decisions to be made. The final position on the JCR - webaster - was up to the vote, as was the double position for College Council Rep. As well as that, the theme for Extrav had to be decided, so it was a pretty big thing. I hope you all turned out to vote, you scallywags!

On Thursday night the votes were counted, and the results were officially announced. Michael Benson has now taken his place on the JCR, and so we will hopefully be seeing plenty of upgrades…

Rock On!

Rock On!

Commonly referred to as ‘the big C’, Cancer is a subject that is rarely discussed. However, now is the time to make a stand!

A third of people will experience some kind of cancer in their lifetime, so in the age we live in now, it is a prominent issue that must be addressed. Since its foundation, Cancer Research UK has been raising money to fund research into developing cures and protective solutions against the disease. There is a need for massive financial support and cancer awareness in order for Cancer Research UK to continue their amazing work and this is…

Jungle Fever!

Jungle Fever!

The BIGGEST event of the year has got a theme! After the Vote on Thursday of week 4, Jungle Fever has been announced as the theme of this year’s Extrav at Cartmel! There’s going to be trees and snakes aplenty when the event kicks of on 26th of June in the summer term, and to keep you on your toes some of them may be real.

In case you’re asking, “What’s Extrav?” in that confused tone, let me try and explain… Every year, for three consecutive days in the summer term, the colleges hold their Extravaganza, or Extrav. Three colleges hold…

Syndicate

Syndicate

Cartmel’s first Big Night Out of 2008 was a sellout trip to the ever popular club Syndicate in Blackpool on January the 24th and coming from someone who certainly took advantage of not being on sober duty that night, I can safely say that it was a fantastic event which exceeded all expectations!

The night was spent posing for Facebook photos we’d all regret the next day, ‘ooo-ing and ahhing’ over the bubble tables and leopard print floor and most of all raving to DJ Sammy who made a guest appearance at the club, playing his top hits from ‘Heaven’ to…

Sports Roundup

Sports Roundup

Well, it has been a fun term so far in the Carter Shield! At the beginning of this academic year the Carter Shield underwent a massive overhaul and changed its whole format. Whereas there used to be a different sporting event each Sunday there are now three or four events a term, with the rest of the Sundays being dedicated to learning the sports before playing them.

The three events for this term are Pop Lacrosse, Volleyball and Basketball. There have been two taster sessions so far and both have been good fun! At the latest session Cartmel turned out nine…

Just A Quick Word

Just A Quick Word

2008 marks an exciting year for Cartmel as we enter the 40th year of the college. There is currently a lot of discussion about how this will be celebrated by not just the JCR but also the SCR. This will be something to pencil into the diaries when we actually decide when this is going be. I will of course let you all know as and when. But in the mean time there are two main things I would like to clarify and go over which have unfortunately become buzzwords over the last few months.

College Bars
Firstly, although there is no intention…

College Council

Our job is to attend College Council meetings with any feedback or opinions we have from Cartmel students. We are there to vocalise these views and to take note on agenda items of interest, which we then relay to the college.
