For all the second years, and those third years going into their fourth, the accommodation sign up has begun. This year there have been changes to the sign up system and preference is given to those going into their final year, and there have been no guarantees made that continuing students will get a room.
Firsts years are able to sign up a few weeks later than the rest, so as to make sure they have been given all the relevant information on the options available to them.
For this College & Residences have teamed up with LUSU housing and LUSU advice.
The presentation for Cartmel College will be held in George Fox Lecture Theatre 1 on the 20th November. It starts at 18:00 and will last around half an hour.
The talk will include information about campus and city living. So where do you fancy living? Town? Campus? Who with? With all these decisions in mind it is an easy time to get stressed, so just try not to panic yourselves. All you have to do is think rationally; what are the advantages of living off campus as opposed to those remaining on campus.
From speaking to people that live off campus the main reason why they chose to leave is the cost of campus accommodation. With the en-suite rooms on south west campus being around £85 when people can pay around £50 for a place off lots cannot justify spending so much. However, there is still the cost of a bus pass or a parking permit, but then this does not equate to the difference between the two.
Living in town also helps a lot of people do more work when they are on campus This being because if they have to stay on campus for lectures that are quite spaced then most go to the library, as opposed to going home, watching neighbours and having a nap. Personally I don’t think I would be motivated enough to spend that long in the library; more time would be spent on the steps in Alex Square, sausage and bean in one hand and an éclair in the other.
The main advantage with on campus housing seems to be the convenience. As mentioned you can just pop home when you fee like it. In addition to this you have the proximity to the library and the vast numbers of people who are around all the time.
On the other hand though you are further away from the nightlife Lancaster has to offer. You can’t just walk home (quickly) or nip into town in a for a few minutes at whim.
As you can see there are reasons to stay and reasons to go, but what I would make sure you do is pick your reasons and be happy with the choice you have made. All in all you will be there for a year and if it doesn’t feel like your doing the right thing then don’t do it, especially don’t rush it.
So now go have a look. Obviously you have all seen some campus accommodation. Then there is Chancellors Wharf, the university based rooms in town; Cable Street, which im told is full already; City Block; LUSU housing and private landlords. The choice s endless, but find something you like!
